Interview with Rebecca Harrison (Nov. 2019)

This is your second book that you have published with Influence Publishing. What was your first and how did that impact you?

The first book is called Family Tree ~ Embracing Your Father Daughter Roots for Forgiveness, Fulfillment and Freedom.  It’s a collaborative book in which 11 co-authors – eight daughters and three fathers – share their true life stories regarding this important relationship.  It was a wild ride, painful at times and also so very healing and rewarding. One of the most positive aspects is that when discussions are broached, greater understanding can take place and healing can occur.  The messages and gratitude from readers has also been very encouraging.

What influenced you to publish a second book?

It was an evolution really.  One of the authors of the first book, Storma Sire, is also an artist and shared her beautiful tree image for the front cover. With that the title, Family Tree, surfaced.  Shortly after that, my publisher Julie Ann and I realized that there are many relationships within families. This was meant to be a series. The intention of the books is to bring more awareness, healing and growth for both authors and readers.  Families are where our experiences and views of the world begin, so on a broader scale, the books stand for more love and healing for ourselves and the world.

Was it easier the second time around?

For me personally, it was.  My Mother Daughter story was simpler to write than my Father Daughter story.  And I learned from the first book. There is always evolution in that sense. Both groups of authors have been incredible to work with and the relationships that have been created make my heart sing.

What are the special challenges that come with pulling together a collaborative book that are different from publishing a solo book?

Good question as I have yet to publish a solo book.  In some ways it’s easier because it’s a shared effort and less writing for me. Since I’m fascinated by people and their stories, I love the collaboration aspect.  There is the task of finding the right people for a collaborative book. I find so many people are truly interested and have powerful stories. The ones who decide not to join all have their own important reasons.  I have felt strongly that both books have been so divinely led in terms of the authors who did step forward.

Can you tell us something about your newest book – title, how many authors and the focus.

The new book is called Family Tree ~ Embracing Your Mother Daughter Roots for Forgiveness, Fulfillment and Freedom.  Eleven authors joined this book, just like the first one. We all share stories of our relationship with our mother, and a few also speak of the journey of motherhood.  I am truly blown away by these beautiful and powerful stories.  Each one is so unique and yet there is a common thread that weaves us all together.  Every story offers the reader real hope and guidance for those healing this relationship, deep insight into this foundational relationship as well as tools for mothers (and fathers) who want to create a nurturing environment for their daughters to thrive.

What are your hopes for this second book? Who are you hoping to inspire?

I believe that every woman will find aspects of themselves somewhere in these stories.  Certain chapters will resonate strongly while others may be just a beautiful read.  This is the beauty of a collaborative book which offers so many different experiences and viewpoints.  Of course we hope to inspire mothers and daughters, and I think any man who decides to read it will gain some excellent insight into the important women in their lives.

What would you like your reader know about you?

Just that I’m extremely grateful for this experience, my amazing co-authors and my friendship with my publisher, Julie Ann.  For anyone out there who has an idea for a collaborative book, or even their own book, I say go for it!  It will no doubt be a rich and rewarding experience.

Interview with Rebecca Harrison (Mar. 2019)

Please share a bit about your journey to become a published author.

My journey to becoming a published author has been a wild ride!! It started over a year ago when I was chosen as one of the 15 women to contribute to Christine Awram’s first Woman of Worth Collaborative Book. This is how I met Julie Salisbury, as Influence Publishing was publishing Christine’s book. Julie and I hit it off immediately because I think she likes fun and adventure even more than me! The story in that first book was a raw and real story from my own life, so it was an emotional journey also.

After that I decided to attend one of Julie’s Writing Retreats, but Sydney, BC would not do. France called my name!! What an incredible week we had in the French countryside and this is where I birthed the idea for my own Collaborative Book all about Father Daughter relationships. Julie was a great collaborator and support, and eventually even decided to share her own story as a chapter in my book. I was honoured.

Eleven brave souls have come together and I’ve been astounded how our stories are diverse, powerful, unique and how common themes run through and intertwine at the same time. Eight wonderful Daughters and three fabulous Fathers share from the heart. I truly feel this book is divinely led.

How does the writing process work for you? Do you schedule a time every day, work madly when inspiration hits or ?

Mostly I work madly when inspiration hits. And a deadline always puts a good fire under me! As a recovered perfectionist, I do like to tweak and read again and tweak some more. This is also because this book is so important to me and I believe it will bring a lot of goodness and healing for so many.

What did you find most difficult about the writing and publishing process? What was the easiest?

Hmmmm, most difficult was deciding just how raw and real to get, especially since my family will read it. Easiest…..I enjoy supporting and encouraging the other authors who are all amazing and bring such powerful stories!

What title (or titles) have you released? Please include a short synopsis of what your book is (or books are) about.

The title of the book was also a major process, and it changed many times! I love our final title which is:  Family Tree ~ Embracing Your Father Daughter Roots for Forgiveness, Fulfillment and Freedom.

This book was born out of my own healing journey and my relationship with my Dad. The brave authors and stories that have come together illuminate the importance of this early father daughter bond. They are a light of hope for women and men who are healing this relationship, and also show what is possible when conscious fatherhood lays a foundation for girls to shine.

Do you have any new books in the planning or writing stage?

What I love about the Family Tree title is that I see it as the umbrella for a series of books. After Fathers and Daughters, I plan to collaborate on stories of Mothers and Daughters, Fathers and Sons and Mothers and Sons.  I’m just not sure which will come first. I actually first envisioned the Father Daughter Book as a Documentary Film, so this is also part of the ultimate vision for the Family Tree Series.

What would you like readers to know about you?

I’m very grateful for this whole process, for sharing my heart out to the world, to have met Julie and for her support, as well as all of the great people connected to Influence Publishing ~ Marilyn, Greg, Danielle, Craig and Judith! I know there are others who I just haven’t met yet.

I’ve been blessed to have careers in Acting, Personal Training, and Social Enterprise. As a little girl, I always dreamed that I would be a Writer, so it’s exciting to be realizing the dream! I’m passionate about health and fitness. I’m a Connector and fascinated by human beings. I’m most proud of my creative children, and my talented husband, Dr. Nicholas Harrison. Benjamin is sixteen and is a writer and voracious reader himself.  Olivia is twelve, a great lover of cats and a visual artist, through and through.

In closing is there anything else you’d like to share?

I’d like to share a quote that is also my chapter quote in the book. While there are uplifting stories within the book, and examples of positive father daughter relationships, there are also examples of challenging relationships that require healing. This quote spoke to me deeply:

“Pain travels through family lines until someone is ready to heal it in themselves. By going through the agony of healing you no longer pass the poison chalice onto the generations that follow. It is incredibly important and sacred work.” ~Unknown~

I thank and honour all of my incredible co-authors, for their bravery and vulnerability. Special thanks to you, Julie Salisbury, I know you’ve held my hand a lot on this journey. I thank the readers and I’m so proud and honoured to share this book out into the world!
